Ethereum secures 43.8 million staked coins in third quarter despite yield drop

Ethereum staking reached a new milestone in the third quarter as the total amount of locked tokens climbed to 43.8 million ETH. According to a recent report from Bitwise, this figure represents nearly 36 percent of the entire circulating supply. The growth in participation occurred even as staking yields experienced a notable decline, dropping down to an average of 2.63 percent over the period.
This trend highlights a broader shift in how participants interact with proof-of-stake networks. Staking has increasingly become a baseline mechanism for long-term holders seeking to secure the network while earning passive returns, rather than just chasing the highest short-term percentage rates. Alongside Ethereum, rival networks also saw substantial accumulation, with Solana staking hitting a record 440.5 million SOL during the same timeframe.
For the wider digital asset market, these figures demonstrate underlying network commitment despite shifting macroeconomic and sector-specific conditions. Falling yields typically threaten to disincentivize participation, but the resilience in ETH and SOL staking numbers suggests that holders are prioritizing network security and long-term positioning over immediate yield maximization. This steady lock-up of supply can also alter circulating liquidity dynamics across major trading venues.
Industry analysts have pointed out that the simultaneous growth in staking metrics across multiple layer-1 chains reflects maturing user behavior. Observers note that network participation is becoming less sensitive to minor fluctuations in reward rates as infrastructure tools improve and institutional staking options expand. At the same time, the rising network activity on competing chains like Solana indicates a multi-chain environment where users actively distribute capital across different ecosystems.
As we look ahead, market participants will monitor whether staking participation continues to expand if yields remain compressed or face further downward pressure. The balance between locked supply and circulating liquidity will likely play a crucial role in shaping price action and network decentralization moving forward. Observers will also track how protocol upgrades and changing validator economics influence these metrics in the upcoming quarters.
