Hedge funds and banks shed 68,000 BTC in spot ETFs as sovereign funds increased stakes

Recent research from Galaxy Research reveals a notable shift in the holder base of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. According to their findings, nine prominent hedge funds and traditional banks collectively cut 68,000 BTC worth of exposure from these products. This sizeable withdrawal by fast money players coincided with the drying up of the popular cash-and-carry trade, which had previously driven significant institutional capital into the market.
To understand this movement, we have to look at how these financial institutions operate within the digital asset space. The cash-and-carry trade typically involves taking a long position in spot Bitcoin ETFs while simultaneously shorting the futures market to capture the yield spread. When market conditions shift and the basis narrows, this strategy loses its appeal, prompting fast money participants to unwind their positions and look for yield elsewhere.
Yet, this capital flight did not spell trouble for the broader ETF ecosystem. As Wall Street speculators stepped back, wealth platforms and sovereign funds quietly stepped in to absorb the selling pressure. This transition highlights a maturation in the investor profile backing spot Bitcoin products, moving away from short-term arbitrage seekers toward entities with longer investment horizons.
Industry observers have pointed out that this structural rotation is ultimately a healthy development for the market. While hedge fund liquidations can create short-term volatility and headline-grabbing outflows, replacement by sovereign wealth and dedicated wealth platforms suggests a stickier, more resilient base of assets under management. Market analysts note that resilient institutional demand helps cushion the blow when macro conditions cause arbitrage strategies to break down.
Looking ahead, market participants will be watching closely to see if sovereign and wealth platform inflows continue to outpace the capital leaving speculative desks. As regulatory frameworks evolve and more traditional allocators complete their due diligence, the composition of spot Bitcoin ETF holders may continue to shift further away from traditional macro hedge funds and toward long-term institutional portfolios.
