Pantera Capital

Venture

Pantera Capital was founded in 2003 by Dan Morehead , a former Head of Global Macro Trading and CFO at Tiger Management . The firm initially operated as a global macro hedge fund before pivoting to become the first institutional investment fund focused on Bitcoin in the United States in 2013 . As of January 31, 2026, Pantera Capital manages approximately $3.8 billion in assets under management , though other sources report higher figures. The firm operates across multiple strategies including venture equity, early-stage tokens, liquid tokens, and a dedicated Bitcoin fund.

Pantera's track record is striking. By December 2017, the fund was up 25,004%, with compound annual returns around 250 percent since its inception . The firm has invested in over 266 companies, including 16 unicorns and 15 IPOs . In 2025, Pantera demonstrated exceptional activity, making 36 investments and leading 17 out of 20 new investments, representing 85% of deals. In January 2026, Pantera Capital announced the first close of its Pantera Fund V, targeting $1 billion in commitments .

Notable Investments

Pantera's portfolio reads like a who's who of crypto infrastructure. Major holdings include Circle, which got listed on the New York Stock Exchange in Jun 2025 at a market cap of $6.22B , and Coinbase, one of the largest crypto exchanges. Four Pantera portfolio companies went public in 2025 with a combined market cap of approximately $33 billion as of January 2026 (Circle, Figure, Gemini, Amber) . The firm also invested in Bitstamp in 2014 , which was acquired by Robinhood earlier this year for $200 million . Other significant portfolio companies include Alchemy, Arbitrum, Morpho, Flashbots, Ondo Finance, and Polkadot. Lauren Stephanian sourced many high performing deals, invested in top companies such as Morpho, Flashbots, and Staked .

Team

Dan Morehead founded Pantera Capital Management in 2003 and remains CEO and founding partner. Paul Veradittakit is the Managing Partner at Pantera Capital and has backed more than 200 strategic investments since 2014 . Franklin Bi is a General Partner focused on early-stage venture and token investing, and since joining Pantera in 2019, Franklin has led investments across DeFi, infrastructure, and Web3 gaming . The firm experienced turnover in 2023: co-CIO Joey Krug revealed that the Liquid Token Fund had lost 80% during 2022, and Krug left Pantera in 2017 after joining to help manage the fund . President and managing partner Jasper Lewitton quietly cut ties with the crypto VC firm in 2023 . The current leadership includes Marc Selfon as Chief Financial Officer with more than two decades of alternatives experience, who had a 13-year tenure at Apollo Global Management .

Recent Activity

Pantera showed aggressive deployment in 2025. Series A accounted for 56.7% of total capital, Series B accounted for 29.6%, and Seed round accounted for 13.7% . The firm's sector focus included infrastructure (33.9% of capital), consumer (17.82%), AI plus Robotics (16.4%), stablecoins (16.2%) . Notable recent deals include leading M0's seed round in 2023, with M0 raising a $40 million Series B in August 2025 led by Polychain Capital and Ribbit Capital . In July 2025, Ondo launched Ondo Catalyst, a $250 million strategic initiative backed by Pantera . The firm is also active in Digital Asset Trading companies, having been the anchor investor in the first DAT launches in the US, including DeFi Development Corp. (DFDV) and Cantor Equity Partners (CEP) .

Pantera's geographic focus remains primarily the United States, though the firm has expanded globally. The 2025 vintage demonstrated maturity with multiple successful exits. However, the firm also faces challenges: Pantera has warned this year that 2026 could bring "brutal pruning" for over-levered or poorly performing crypto treasuries, and the fund backed Satsuma's big treasury raise in 2025 , though that investment has performed poorly. The firm's willingness to lead rounds, take board seats, and push for portfolio company discipline (even liquidation when necessary) shows an active, hands-on approach. With Fund V deploying capital and multiple portfolio IPOs validating its thesis, Pantera remains one of crypto's most influential institutional investors.
