Fenbushi Capital is one of Asia's earliest blockchain-focused venture capital firms. Founded in 2015 in Shanghai, China, it launched at a moment when institutional interest in blockchain was scarce and the Ethereum ecosystem was just taking shape. The firm built its reputation by betting on core Ethereum infrastructure before DeFi became a mainstream term. Its name comes from the Chinese fenbushi (分布式), meaning "distributed" – a direct reference to the distributed ledger technology at the heart of its thesis.

The firm operates with a global mandate but maintains deep roots in Asia, with a presence in both Shanghai and San Francisco. It focuses on early-stage and growth-stage blockchain projects, particularly those building open financial infrastructure. Fenbushi does not publicly disclose AUM figures. Its strategy centers on Ethereum-adjacent protocols and decentralized finance primitives, though it has expanded into cross-chain infrastructure and Web3 application layers over time.

Notable investments

  • MakerDAO – early backing of the decentralized stablecoin protocol that spawned DAI and became a cornerstone of DeFi
  • Aave (formerly ETHLend) – one of the largest decentralized lending protocols, now managing billions in deposits
  • Synthetix – decentralized synthetic asset protocol on Ethereum
  • Gnosis – prediction markets and smart contract tooling, now best known for the Gnosis Chain and Safe multisig wallet
  • 0x Protocol – open protocol for decentralized token exchange
  • Augur – decentralized prediction market platform built on Ethereum
  • dYdX – decentralized derivatives exchange, among the highest-volume DEX platforms globally
  • Ren Protocol – cross-chain liquidity protocol (note: wound down in 2023 following Alameda collapse)

The portfolio reflects a clear early-mover advantage in DeFi. Several of these investments – Aave, Synthetix, MakerDAO – grew into billion-dollar protocols. Ren Protocol stands as a notable setback: it shut down in early 2023 after losing key funding when Alameda Research, a major backer, collapsed in the FTX crisis.

Team

Bo Shen is the founding and managing partner. He is one of the most recognized early Ethereum investors in Asia and has been the public face of the firm since its launch. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-creator, served as a general partner at Fenbushi in its early years – a relationship that gave the fund unmatched access to the Ethereum founding community and shaped its investment thesis heavily toward that ecosystem. Public information about the broader investment team and current partnership structure is limited.

Recent activity

Fenbushi has continued deploying into Web3 infrastructure and DeFi through 2024, though deal flow disclosures remain sparse compared to larger US-based funds. The firm has participated in rounds for projects building in areas such as layer-2 scaling, account abstraction, and decentralized social infrastructure. Public information about specific deal sizes and any new fund raises after 2022 is limited. For verified current portfolio data, Crunchbase tracks Fenbushi's disclosed investments.

Fenbushi's long track record in DeFi gives it credibility with founders building in that space. Its main challenge is the same facing all early-vintage crypto funds: navigating a market where the infrastructure plays it backed in 2016–2019 are now mature, and the next generation of opportunities sits in application-layer and consumer-facing products where the firm has less historical edge. With a portfolio count of 19 disclosed investments and 13 lead rounds, it remains a focused, conviction-driven fund rather than a spray-and-pray operator.
