WisdomTree, Inc. (NASDAQ: WETF) is a New York-based asset management company founded in 2004 by Jonathan Steinberg. The firm built its name as a pioneer of fundamentally weighted exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and today manages approximately $100–110 billion in assets under management across equity, fixed income, and commodity strategies. Over the past several years, WisdomTree has made a deliberate strategic push into digital assets – both as a product issuer and as a direct investor in blockchain infrastructure companies.

WisdomTree is primarily an asset manager, not a dedicated venture fund. Its venture-style investments are relatively few and tightly focused on companies that support regulated digital asset markets – tokenization infrastructure, custody, and compliance rails. The firm has publicly stated that blockchain-based finance is central to its long-term product roadmap, and its direct investments reflect that thesis rather than a diversified crypto venture strategy.

Notable investments

  • Securrency – WisdomTree was among the backers of Securrency, a blockchain-based financial market infrastructure firm. Securrency was later acquired by U.S. Bank in 2023, marking one of the more notable institutional exits in the tokenization space.
  • WisdomTree Prime – while an internal product rather than an external investment, WisdomTree launched this regulated digital wallet and tokenized fund platform on both Ethereum and Stellar blockchains. It represents the firm's direct bet on on-chain financial products under SEC oversight.

Public information about the remaining portfolio companies (3 of 5) and the two deals WisdomTree led is limited. The firm does not operate a public-facing venture vehicle and discloses strategic investments selectively in its SEC filings.

Team

  • Jonathan Steinberg – CEO and co-founder. He launched WisdomTree in 2004 after earlier work in financial media. Steinberg has been the primary voice behind the firm's digital asset strategy.
  • William Peck – Head of Digital Assets, responsible for WisdomTree's blockchain product development and institutional digital asset relationships.
  • Alexis Marinof – Head of Europe, overseeing the firm's WisdomTree Europe operations where most of its crypto ETP activity is listed.

Managing partner or general partner structures are not disclosed publicly because WisdomTree's investments flow through its corporate balance sheet rather than a dedicated fund vehicle.

Recent activity

Between 2023 and 2025, WisdomTree moved on several fronts simultaneously. It filed – and eventually received regulatory feedback – on a spot Bitcoin ETF application in the United States, joining the wave of issuers that ultimately launched in January 2024 following SEC approval. In Europe, WisdomTree has offered physically-backed Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs on major exchanges for several years, giving it a longer operational track record than most US peers in crypto products. The firm also expanded the asset class coverage of WisdomTree Prime to include tokenized versions of its own short-term Treasury fund, positioning it among a small group of asset managers actively issuing regulated on-chain fund tokens.

WisdomTree's geographic focus is the United States and Europe, with particular regulatory emphasis on jurisdictions where digital asset ETPs and tokenized securities have clear frameworks. It has not made significant disclosed investments in Asia-Pacific or Latin American blockchain ventures.

The firm's outlook is shaped by its dual identity as a regulated product issuer and a strategic investor. Its wins are tied to the broad legitimization of crypto ETFs and the slow but advancing tokenization of traditional financial instruments. Its risks are equally institutional: regulatory shifts, fee compression in the ETF market, and execution uncertainty around WisdomTree Prime's adoption. With a modest venture portfolio of five companies and two leads, WisdomTree is not a top-tier crypto venture allocator by volume – but its institutional credibility and distribution network give it meaningful signal weight when it does back a company. More detail on specific portfolio companies can be found in its annual 10-K filings with the SEC and on its official site.
