Wintermute is a London-based algorithmic trading firm and market maker founded in 2017. The company operates across more than 50 centralized and decentralized exchanges, providing liquidity in thousands of trading pairs. Over time it expanded into early-stage venture investing through Wintermute Ventures, backing crypto infrastructure and DeFi protocols at the token or pre-token stage. The firm is privately held and has not publicly disclosed total assets under management, though its daily trading volumes have been reported in the range of several billion dollars.
Wintermute occupies an unusual position in the crypto ecosystem: it is simultaneously a service provider (market making) and an investor in the projects it supports. This dual role gives it deep insight into token liquidity dynamics, but also raises questions about conflicts of interest that the firm has addressed in public interviews. Its geographic base is the United Kingdom, with additional operations in Singapore and other financial hubs. The firm targets projects globally, with no stated regional concentration.
Notable investments
- Hashflow – decentralized exchange focused on cross-chain swaps; Wintermute participated in early funding rounds
- Forta Network – real-time threat detection for on-chain activity
- Aevo – on-chain options and perpetuals exchange; Wintermute acted as both investor and liquidity provider
- Elixir Protocol – decentralized market-making infrastructure
- Dune Analytics – on-chain data and dashboards platform
Public information on the full 30-project portfolio is limited. Many investments are in DeFi infrastructure, derivatives platforms, and developer tooling. Wintermute typically participates in token rounds rather than traditional equity deals, which means many positions are not reported through standard venture disclosure channels.
Team
Evgeny Gaevoy is co-founder and CEO. Before starting Wintermute he worked at Optiver, the Amsterdam-based high-frequency trading firm, where he gained experience in algorithmic market making across traditional financial instruments. Gaevoy is an active public voice for the firm, publishing commentary on crypto market structure and DeFi liquidity on social media. The names of other co-founders and managing partners are not consistently disclosed in public sources.
Recent activity
The most significant event in Wintermute's recent history was a $160 million exploit in September 2022. An attacker drained the firm's DeFi treasury wallet by exploiting a vulnerability in the Profanity vanity address generator, which produces private keys with low entropy. Wintermute publicly confirmed the hack, stated it remained solvent, and continued operations without pausing market making services. The firm later acknowledged the breach in detail and offered the attacker a 10% white-hat bounty. No funds were recovered. The incident is one of the largest DeFi exploits on record and remains a reference point in discussions about operational security for crypto trading firms. A detailed contemporaneous report was covered by CoinDesk and The Block.
In 2023 and 2024, Wintermute continued expanding its venture activity, participating in funding rounds for DeFi derivatives and intent-based trading infrastructure projects. The firm also published market structure research and engaged with regulators in the UK and EU on digital asset frameworks, particularly around the MiCA regulation.
Wintermute's retail ROI of 0.38 across its public portfolio reflects the broader token market downturn since 2022. Many of its investments were made during peak valuations, and a significant portion of DeFi infrastructure tokens have not recovered to those levels. That said, the firm's market-making revenue stream is separate from venture returns, giving it a more stable financial base than pure-play crypto VCs. As on-chain derivatives and intent-based trading gain traction in 2025–2026, Wintermute's early positions in those categories may see renewed interest. Its combined role as liquidity provider and backer continues to attract both partnerships and scrutiny. More information is available on the official Wintermute website.
