Tribe Capital is a San Francisco-based venture capital firm founded in 2018 by three former partners who left Chamath Palihapitiya's Social Capital together. The firm built its early reputation on a data-driven investment thesis – applying quantitative product-market fit analysis to early-stage bets, a method the founding team developed and published as research while still at Social Capital.

The firm targets technology and fintech companies at Series A through growth stages, with a concentrated focus on the United States. Tribe raised its debut fund of approximately $130 million in 2019, followed by a larger second fund. Total AUM has not been publicly disclosed in detail. The firm has co-invested alongside Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, and other top-tier funds on several deals, signaling early credibility in competitive rounds.

Notable investments

  • FTX – Tribe participated in early funding rounds for Sam Bankman-Fried's exchange. FTX collapsed in November 2022 in one of crypto's largest frauds, resulting in near-total write-offs for investors including Tribe. This remains the firm's most damaging public setback.
  • Kraken – Investment in the US-based crypto exchange, one of the few major centralized exchanges to navigate 2022–2023 without a collapse.
  • Carta – Cap table management platform for startups; a widely cited portfolio win in the fintech space.
  • Robinhood – Tribe was among early-stage backers of the retail brokerage ahead of its 2021 IPO on Nasdaq.
  • Brex – Corporate card and spend management startup; part of the firm's broader fintech thesis.

Public information about the full scope of Tribe's crypto-native portfolio beyond the names above is limited. The firm has not published a comprehensive portfolio page with deal sizes or timestamps.

Team

Tribe was co-founded by Arjun Sethi (CEO), Jonathan Hsu, and Ted Maidenberg. All three previously held senior roles at Social Capital, where they developed the quantitative frameworks they later carried to Tribe. Arjun Sethi also co-founded MessageMe, which Yahoo acquired in 2014. Jonathan Hsu led data science initiatives at Social Capital and has published academic-style writing on measuring product-market fit through retention curves. Ted Maidenberg focused on enterprise and infrastructure investments. The three form a complementary team mixing operational, analytical, and technical backgrounds.

Additional partners and principals have joined since founding, but public biographical detail on the broader team is limited. The firm does not maintain a heavily public-facing media presence compared to larger multi-stage funds.

Recent activity

After the FTX collapse in late 2022, Tribe – like much of the venture industry – faced heightened scrutiny over due diligence practices in crypto. The firm continued operating through the 2023–2024 cycle, with reported attention toward AI-adjacent infrastructure and fintech. Specific deal announcements from 2024–2025 have been sparse in public filings and press. No new major crypto fund raise has been publicly confirmed as of mid-2025.

Tribe's Crunchbase profile lists activity across fintech, SaaS, and blockchain categories. The firm's official site publishes occasional research on data-driven investing. Coverage of the FTX exposure appeared in The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times after the exchange's bankruptcy filing in November 2022.

The firm's long-term standing in crypto investing will depend on whether its surviving positions – particularly in regulated, US-compliant exchanges and fintech infrastructure – can generate meaningful returns to offset the FTX write-down. Its data-driven sourcing methodology remains a genuine differentiator on paper, though the FTX case demonstrated that quantitative product metrics cannot substitute for governance and legal due diligence when backing offshore entities.
