KuCoin Ventures is the venture and incubation arm of the KuCoin cryptocurrency exchange, one of the world's largest digital asset trading platforms by volume. The fund operates from the Seychelles, mirroring the legal domicile of its parent company. KuCoin Ventures was formally established in 2021 – initially under the KuCoin Labs banner – to invest in and incubate early-stage blockchain projects, with a secondary goal of enriching the pipeline of tokens listed on the KuCoin exchange itself.

The fund focuses on seed and Series A rounds across four primary verticals: decentralized finance (DeFi), GameFi and NFT infrastructure, Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks, and Web3 tooling. Its geographic mandate is global, though the team maintains a strong orientation toward Asia-Pacific founders, reflecting KuCoin's core user base. Total assets under management have not been publicly disclosed. The portfolio count stands at 23 investments, with 8 recorded as lead positions – a meaningful lead ratio that signals active conviction rather than passive follow-on participation.

KuCoin itself raised a $150 million Series B round in May 2022 at a $10 billion valuation, backed by Jump Crypto, Circle Ventures, and IDg Capital, among others. A portion of that capital was earmarked to scale the ventures and labs programs. The fund benefits from exchange-level distribution: portfolio projects gain direct access to KuCoin's listing team, market-making relationships, and a retail user base that exceeded 27 million registered accounts as of 2023.

Notable investments

  • Injective Protocol (INJ) – a decentralized derivatives and DeFi layer built on Cosmos. KuCoin participated in early funding rounds before Injective became one of the stronger-performing L1 networks of the 2023–2024 cycle.
  • Alchemy Pay (ACH) – a fiat-crypto payment gateway targeting merchant adoption in Southeast Asia and South Korea. KuCoin Ventures joined as a strategic backer given Alchemy Pay's alignment with exchange onboarding flows.
  • Poolz Finance – a decentralized launchpad protocol. KuCoin backed the project in its early IDO phase, consistent with the fund's interest in token launch infrastructure.
  • Multiple GameFi and metaverse projects – the fund was active during the 2021–2022 GameFi boom, making several investments in play-to-earn ecosystems, though many of those projects experienced significant drawdowns as sector sentiment shifted through 2022–2023.

Note: KuCoin Ventures does not publish a complete public portfolio list. The investments above are drawn from publicly available announcements and press releases. Deal sizes were not disclosed for most transactions.

Team

Public information about KuCoin Ventures' managing partners and investment committee is limited. The parent exchange is led by CEO Johnny Lyu, who has been the public face of KuCoin since 2020 and has spoken broadly about the fund's mission at industry conferences. The ventures team operates with a degree of separation from exchange leadership, but specific partner names and backgrounds have not been published on official channels as of early 2026. This is a meaningful disclosure gap compared to dedicated crypto-native funds such as Multicoin Capital or Paradigm, which publish team bios prominently.

Recent activity

KuCoin itself faced serious legal pressure in 2024 when the U.S. Department of Justice filed criminal charges against the exchange and its founders for alleged Bank Secrecy Act violations. In June 2024, KuCoin agreed to a settlement – exiting the U.S. market, paying approximately $297 million in forfeiture and penalties, and installing an independent compliance monitor. This episode created uncertainty around the exchange's expansion plans and, by extension, the deployment pace of KuCoin Ventures through late 2024 and into 2025.

Despite the legal headwinds, the fund continued to signal activity in AI-adjacent blockchain projects and restaking infrastructure during 2025, tracking broader market trends. The retail ROI figure of 2.08x across the portfolio suggests returns above breakeven but below the exceptional multiples generated by top-quartile crypto venture funds in the same vintage years.

KuCoin Ventures occupies an interesting structural position: it is an exchange-native fund with built-in distribution advantages, but its investment thesis is inevitably shaped – and at times constrained – by the commercial interests of its parent platform. Investors and founders evaluating the fund should weigh that alignment carefully. Further disclosures about AUM, team composition, and individual deal terms would materially improve the fund's standing among institutional counterparties.
